Earlier this week I took myself on an artist date and visited Kenilworth Park and Aquatic Gardens in Washington, D.C. I was on the hunt for water lily and lotus blossom photographs, since I can’t grow these meditative flowers in my own garden.
One of the lessons I write about in Blooming into Mindfulness is that beauty can be found in your own back yard if you slow down long enough to notice it. It’s why the vast majority of my photography line is based on images of flowers that I grew myself.
Visiting Kenilworth for the first time took my breath away. I also received a little whisper that it might be time for me to broaden my horizons a bit more, to step out of the familiarity of my own garden, where my photography business took root so unexpectedly the year I was also writing my book. With empty nest-hood just a few weeks away, who knows where the road will lead?

Here is a small selection of images I brought home with me. Let me know what you think! Can you imagine any of them on your wall as a vibrant metal print? Or perhaps in a notecard collection? These are so new that I don’t even have titles for them yet. So if you have name ideas that would also be fun to hear! In the meantime, I’ll just label them with letters for you to reference in your replies.
I will use your feedback to guide my decisions on new products to introduce this fall on damselwingsphotography.com. And a home art show is also in the works! Thanks in advance for your opinions!
I’ve got just a few more days left of my July July photo challenge. You can check out those images on my Martha Brettschneider – Writer & Photographer Facebook or Instagram pages. And I of course love it when you share you own photos with me to spread the love!

Beautiful shots! I love the promise of A, The color composition of texture and color composition of D and the detail of G. So difficult to pick one favorite.
I discovered Kenilworth Gardens about 6 or 7 years ago as an adventure off the beaten path with the boys. It was a cultural journey that let us see and experience a part of Washington D.C. that usually is out of sight for us. We experienced kindness, caring and bewilderment that day.
Glad you found this treasure!

C and D are my faves! A feels very pertinent at this time…bursting from bud form as I am.

These are so wonderful – it is hard to pick a favorite. My attempt to narrow it down: C,D,F,G,H. Yes I can definitely see these as metal prints on my wall!
